Managing Physical inactivity by Physiotherapy

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a medical condition where a person experiences extreme fatigue and tiredness. It can also be accompanied by other symptoms for up to six months. In addition, physical or mental activity that doesn’t improve with rest can worsen fatigue.




CFS is not a cure. However, patients suffering from CFS can be treated with physiotherapy. Chronic fatigue syndrome is best treated with physiotherapy. Your physiotherapist will provide a mild exercise program. We will be discussing chronic fatigue syndrome and physiotherapy treatments.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be sudden and often comes with a sore throat, mental and emotional exhaustion, sore throat, and tenderness. Multiple causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome may not be well understood. They could include biological, genetic or infectious, psychological, and environmental. Genetic predisposition, viral and bacterial infection, immune dysfunctions, toxic chemical exposures, severe stress, vaccinations, and so forth. Physiotherapy management

The physiotherapist suggests a gentle range of motion and stretching for a few minutes each day for completely inactive patients. The intensity of these exercises can be gradually increased, which helps to decrease sensitivity.

Exercise therapy

Exercise therapy can help with chronic fatigue because it helps build endurance and tolerance for daily tasks. A physiotherapist evaluates the patient and recommends a grading exercise program. Exercise therapy can help build strength and endurance.

The patient’s ability to stick with the exercises builds muscle memory and boosts confidence. These exercises are squats/calf raises, step-ups, and others. To increase strength and endurance, it is recommended that the patient complete a structured or weighted exercise program once their strength has improved. A detailed record of each patient’s exercise is kept to ensure the desired outcome.

Relaxation exercise

It involves breathing in the fresh air and performing aerobic exercises. This is a great way to increase motivation. It improves endurance and dopamine levels. This, in turn, increases focus and motivation.

Manual therapy

Manual therapy techniques are used to relieve discomfort muscle or nerve irritation. Once their strain has been reduced, the physiotherapist will start an endurance and strength program.

Slow Start

Begin by performing basic household chores for 15–30 minutes. Then, take a break to rest. This is essential to avoid mental or physical exertion, leading to crashing. Crashing can also be caused by sitting or standing too long. You may find it difficult to stand if you are constantly lying down. Instead, incorporate three workouts per week.

Gentle, Low-Impact Exercises

Walking, stretching, and pilates, gentle and low-impact, are all recommended. To build strength, the exercises should be done slowly.

Do exercises (sitting down or leaning back)

It would help if you exercised while sitting or leaning. They can reduce strain from decreased blood flow and make their bodies more comfortable with exercise by sitting down or recumbently. Depending on your fitness level, you can choose to exercise on a stationary or recumbent bicycle.

A recumbent bike should be used for five minutes at a time with very little resistance. Weight lifting for the upper body can be done with weights. For example, you could use dumbbells between 1 and 2 pounds. Then, do one set of dumbbells and then repeat several times. You can pedal stationary by sitting on a chair or lying on the ground while pedaling. A simple 5-minute walk in the park, without fatigue, is recommended by the physiotherapist.
